BuildZig was awarded the “Partners in Preservation Adaptive Re-Use/Rehabilitation Award” for its work on the 412 Monte Vista project in Oakland, CA. BuildZig’s focus on simplicity and innovation helped to solve this riddle: How do you create a modern building inside of an historic one? Our answer: Instead of fighting the historic elements, work with and integrate them.
Originally built in 1908, this is one of the few remaining mansions on what was once known as "Millionaire Hill." BuildZig worked with the City of Oakland and the historic preservationists to convert the 10,000 sq-ft building into apartments.
Key considerations on this project included implementing fire protection measures and ADA compliance without impacting the historic elements of the property. Special care was taken to preserve historic features, such as a grand stairway, which required additional approvals by the building department. The building is now fully-remodeled to modern building code while maintaining its timeless charm. Most importantly, BuildZig always kept in mind its ultimate objective: to recreate a beautiful, historic building that meets the needs of modern city-dwellers.
This project exemplifies our commitment to finding elegant solutions to difficult problems, whether these are for our own development projects or for clients in our services division. BuildZig is committed to keeping the building process simple for all.
